Toxic Yuri VN Jam Postmortem
Here's a word vomit retrospective about the experience of working on this demo for devotion.
The game jam is over. It was a lengthy process with a LOT of work involved, and I feel incredibly good about what my team and I managed to accomplish! I couldn't have made it this far without the ongoing support of my two partners. My darling freak girlfriend playtested every beat and constantly made time for me and my project. My fae feline cat entity gave life to my characters by offering his beautiful artwork for portraits and face icons. Both of them proofread every messed up erotic scene and gave thorough input. Our freaks match up so well and I'm so thankful <3
This project was unexpected, really! I only heard about it on the 13th (two weeks into the game jam) and decided I did NOT want to participate because it felt like a big undertaking, but I had insomnia and couldn't help but write down a few paragraphs of the concept for this game. The story, characters, and progression of it are still remarkably similar to the outlined hypnagogic ramblings; unstable stalker girl seeks out her one true love, conjuring demons and fighting horrific monsters and beautiful women on the way.
The amount of erotic material steadily increased as I saw the tone of others' submissions, and I really let the exploration into taboo subjects advance. Initially this game was meant to be an engaging survival horror RPG with challenging fights, and I think it's retained that identity but with hot stuff added.
I spent mostly all of my free time working on this project. Since I'm a full time streamer and artist I had a lot of things I could cut from my schedule to spend more time working on it and learning RPG maker and Aseprite. It felt like most days I would wake up, immediately get on the computer, and begin working on some aspect of this game. I was the only person on my team coding events, making sprites, making enemies, writing their attributes, designing character classes, writing all of the content and dialogue. It was a huge workload that I just didn't think about.
RPG Maker MV and Aseprite were my main tools for building this up, going from 0 hours to over 350 total between them by the end of the jam. I didn't have any real familiarity or toolkit developed with either, but my general smattering of coding knowledge from game modding and previous art experience helped out immensely. The amount of progress I made in using these programs developed over a short period. Here's an example of the original Sluph compared to a remake. The left one was the first sprite made during this project, while the other is a remake exactly one month later.
This is what toxic yuri does to a woman. It makes you weird about dominant seven foot tall girls who could easily crush you.
Anyway I loved working on this game and I look forward to continuing :) It's been very meaningful as an experience and I think people pick up on the sincerity in some funny little things in it, despite it being a survival horror about cruel women and your potentially erotic interactions with them.
Silly trivia:
- All the combat art for enemies was drawn in MSPaint. I started doing it to make them quick but it became a tradition.
- Sluph's original design came from a peculiar visitor during a period of very bad mental health. If you're out there somewhere, Sluph, know that I'm incredibly normal about you and am endeavoring to make others just as freaky.
- There was another party member planned (who will still be in the full game), but I didn't feel comfortable with the pacing if we went immediately from meeting the daemon to meeting the angel. We really needed time to get you to know Sluph and her deal before introducing someone who is the opposite in many ways.
- The game took inspiration from many titles. Fear and Hunger, Yume Nikki, Silent Hill 2, Look Outside, Earthbound, and more. You can pick out discrete little references to each of these titles somewhere in the game. I tried not to make them too obvious, I really want it to be its own thing.
That's about it. I can do another postmortem once the game is actually fully out!
